Background to the List
The list originated as Julie's Welsh Surnames List, run by a Canadian researcher with Welsh roots. Researchers would submit details of the person or line they were investigating so the details could be published online. In March 1998 the List was transferred to John Ball's website where it was developed further under a new title: the Welsh Ancestor List. Researchers continued to send in details of their family lines to be added to the List. From 2001 onwards, in order to improve the quality of the information displayed, new submitters were asked to cite the sources of their information.
Finally, in March 2011, after running and developing the List for 13 years, John Ball decided to 'mothball' the List, which documents 2,050 families. No new entries have been added since that date.

Accessing the List
Access the individual sections of the alphabetical Welsh Ancestor List by clicking on the appropriate letter above. At the end of each alphabetical section of the List there is a navigation bar, similar to that above, containing hotlinks to other parts of the List.

Data Verification
Before incorporating any genealogical data from the list into your own family history, ALWAYS check with the submitter and satisfy yourself that his/her data are valid. In particular, ask for details of the sources of the data. If the submitter cannot cite proper references, the data may not be reliable.
