Modern-day Bow Street

Above: Approaching the village of Bow Street from the south.
The village is on the main A487 route from Aberystwyth to Machynlleth.

Above: This attractive cottage is situated on the southern edge of the village.

Welsh Black Inn
Above and below: The Welsh Black Inn, named after a breed of Welsh cattle.
Welsh Black Inn

At the time of the 1881 census, the inn was known as the Black Lion. It is also identified by this name on the late 19th century Ordnance Survey map. In 1881, the inn was occupied by Leonard Jones, his wife and brother, a servant, and two lodgers, as shown in the following extract from the 1881 census:
