Church Place, Neath
Glamorgan

(11.30am - February 1, 1998)

This peaceful square, surrounding St. Thomas's Church, is situated in
the very centre of the old town of Neath (Castell Nedd).

Above: Church Place, with the ancient church of St. Thomas on the right.
The church is dedicated to Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury
(England) from AD 1162 until he was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral
in 1170. Thomas was made a saint in 1173.

Above: The base of the church tower was built in the 14th century, but the
height was increased in 1691.

Above and below: Many of the buildings in Church Place date from
the 18th and early 19th centuries.
